Kuala Lumpur Travel Guide

Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, the capital of the Southeast Asian country of Malaysia is definitely not your normal metropolis. It is a melting pot of different Asian minorities and as a result, it forms a city with a diverse culture- a mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian settlements peacefully living under one developed city. How amazing is that?

Getting There

Most International and domestic flights arrive and depart at either the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) 1 for Malaysia Airlines and KLIA 2 for budget airlines, both terminals is an hour away by car from the main city but with the construction of the KLIA Ekspress, travelling from the airport to the city center is now faster than ever; at just RM35, one-way, you’ll be zipped to the city in just under 20 minutes and you won’t even feel it thanks to the train’s Wi-Fi connection.

Where to Stay

Luxury
If you want to relive Kuala Lumpur’s colonial past, The Majestic Hotel’s Majestic Wing is the place to be. Songs from the 60s welcome you as you enter your modern-colonial designed suite. From the bathroom’s claw-foot bathtub and art-deco tiles to the old-british chairs, this wing screams old glamour! See more on The Majestic’s old world glamour on the previous post.

Place to enjoy a Cuppa

A few minutes away from KL Sentral lies the neighborhood of Bangsar and this is where the third-wave coffee culture is slowly making a scene. With the recent opening of Pulp by Papa Palheta and Lorem Ipsum, Bangsar might be the third-wave coffee heaven in a few years.

Where to chow

Mamak food is very popular with Malaysians. One popular Mamak chain is Pelita that serves authentic Mamak food with an authentic Mamak set-up. A personal favorite of mine would be the Nasi Goreng Ayam and the Roti Canai that can be a bit spicy but with a glass of Teh Tarik, you’re very much good to go. The best t

hing about Mamak’s? Not only is it cheap but it’s also very much on point. Especially when you’re hungry.

I personally love the Colonial Café at The Majestic. The menu screams Colonial British/Malaysian and just the fact that the menu was handed down from one generation to the other makes it even more wonderful. I personally love their take on the Hainanese Chicken Chop. Really, I’d go back again just to eat that.

Bring a piece of Malaysia with you

If you want something authentic to bring home, head over to the Central Market where the traditional crafts are. I suggest getting an authentic pair of Malaysian war masks that is said to ward off unwanted spirits from your home (Of course, a little haggling is needed to get the best price for the keepsake that you want. Now, that’s a skill you have to master!)

Relive the Yesteryears

A walk around KL Sentral would definitely transport you back to the good old years. Thanks to the beautifully preserved buildings of Old Kuala Lumpur Station, The Majestic Hotel and the KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu) Building. Few meters from this area you’ll see the grandoise Sultan Abdul Samad Building and the colorful shop-houses of the Old Market Square (Medan Pesar)

Remind yourself you’re still in Kuala Lumpur

After walking around that little time machine called KL Sentral, its time to remind yourself that you’re still in modern Kuala Lumpur with a walk around KLCC, where the Petronas Twin Towers is located. This is a must-see when in the city; I mean, you haven’t been to Kuala Lumpur if you haven’t seen this (and that’s a fact). Towering about 170 meters above ground, it’s impossible to miss this!

A few meters away from the Petronas Towers is the Menara Tower, which is the 7th tallest freestanding tower in the world. Since tourists visits the Twin Towers more than this structure, the observation deck is not that packed with people but in my opinon, has a better bird’s eye view of the entire city.
