Top Side Trips from Tokyo (Part 1) : Kawagoe

10:08 AM

Location: Kawagoe, Saitama, Japan

Where can a 45-minute train ride take you?
Well, if you're in Tokyo, it can take you to a whole lot of places. On this first installation of Passport Out's "Top Side Trips from Tokyo", We take you to Kawagoe, in the Saitama Prefecture; about 45-minutes north of the capital and can be accessed through the Fukutoshin Line (¥590, one-way).

But really, what makes this place special?

1. Straight out of an old Samurai movie

Due to its proximity to old Tokyo, it ensued close ties between the two cities therefore inheriting many aspects of the old Tokyo culture and architecture. A short 15-minute walk from the Kawagoe Station is the Warehouse District where you can see this mix perfectly. I mean, seriously, look at those warehouse style buildings!

2. Window to the old Tokyo

Kawagoe is known around Japan as "Little Edo" which is derived from Tokyo's old name, Edo. Due to its proximity to the capital, it is said that close aides of then Tokugawa Shogunate resided here. Who knows, a ninja might appear out of nowhere while you're exploring the cobblestone back streets.

3. Everything's better with a little candy

This part of the country used to be one of the biggest suppliers of candy in Japan and their artisanal candies are worth trying. You can see them if you head over to the famous Kashiya Yokocho (Penny Candy Alley)! I suggest getting one of those hand-rolled hard candy with cute designs in the center (it's just too cute to resist! and mind you, it appeals to those who has a sweet tooth)

4. Best in Bargaining

Aside from Candy, Kawagoe is famous for its Antique Flea Market at the Naritasan Betsuin Temple. It usually falls on the 28th day of each month, and it is often said that it's one of the best antique flea markets in Japan. Here, high-quality antique teapots and ceramic treasures line the temple plaza but with a little determination, I'm sure little trinkets can be found along the way *wink*

5. Not touristy?
Seriously, look at that old looking town. It looks like it has a high expectation rate of being a major tourist attraction anytime soon. But the thing is, it's not. You can visit the city first thing in the morning and there's no one around and no, I wasn't kidding. Though, It can be a little crowded if you visit during the holidays like what losers like me did. So make sure to plan ahead.

What do you guys think about Kawagoe? Would you add it to your list?
