Jill's Travel Guide: Rothenburg ob der Tauber
8:32 AM
Location: Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria, Germany
The easiest way to reach Rothenburg ob der Tauber would be
by train. It would take you 15
minutes to walk from the Hauptbahnhof (Station) to the Marktplatz (Market
Square)which is the historical center of the town but the best option in my
opinion is a car ride on the very scenic Romantische
Straße Route that starts in Würzburg and ends at Füssen.
Nearest major international airport is Münich’s Franz Josef
Strauss Airport. Flights to and from the rest of the world lands here.
Things to try
If you love your sweets as much as I do, You can never leave
this place without trying Schneeballen
at the Café Gastehaus (I suggest the
one that has chocolate inside!)
Restaurants
Dinner at the Restaurant
und Café Michaelangelo is a must if you’re into that romantic dining feel
but if you really want to feel Rothenburg ob der Tauber’s medieval history,
dining at the very baroque Zur Hoell
Medieval Tavern would definitely give you that. It will show you how dining
out during the good old days feels like.
Never miss
If
you’re a city-view junkie like me, a climb to the top of the Rathaus Tower
is a must. How can you skip the chance of seeing the town’s distinctly German
architecture from a bird’s eye view?
Experience
the medieval feel of Rothenburg ob der Tauber with a quiet stroll around the
beautiful Plönlein (Little Square) and discover the unique artisans of the
town. Probably get a small token of remembrance? How about a Nutcracker or a
teddy bear?
A
few steps from the Plönlein is the Markusturm and the Büttelhaus.
If you want to know what prison during the medieval times is, these are the
places to be!
Best time to visit
Late summer to early
fall for that perfect town-stroll weather. This is also the best time to
enjoy Germany’s landscape if you’re taking the Romantische Straße route but if you love braving the cold, Rothenburg's Christmas Market sounds pretty awesome too!
