Notes From the Grand Canal

9:15 AM

Location: Venice, Italy
The Grand Canal is a 3,800m long water-traffic corridor in the beautiful city of Venice. Even though a lot of people usually skip exploring this area, there's no doubt that if you look deep into what is really hidden in those side streets, you'll find this area to be really rich with culture (and produce!).
If you wish to explore this part of the city and immerse yourself more into the center of the Venetian culture, I suggest putting the Gritti Palace and the Aman Canal Grande into consideration when looking for accommodation. Both hotels are former private Palazzos and staying at these beautifully Venetian-designed properties (like I did) would be a peek into the former lives of its owners and since they're both along the Grand Canal, having breakfast with a view would be a treat!

The Gritti Palace Rooftop

Head over to the rooftop terrace of the former residence of Doge Andrea Gritti before setting off to your exploration. Take in the view of the iconic Campanile of the San Giorgio Maggiore to your far left and the amazing architecture of the Basilica Santa Maria della Salute not too far. Definitely another plus when staying at this amazing hotel (besides the fact that it screams Venetian luxury, of course.)

Mercato di Rialto
You'll discover a certain city's culture when in their Markets. You'll see how they interact with the people around them; with their friends, peers and even tourists. A few minutes by gondola, you'll discover the Mercato di Rialto with its amazing fresh produce and locally sourced raw materials. Just don't touch the produce! Let the store owner get it for you (that's what tourists do!) I also like walking to the far-end of the Mercato where local artists showcase their works; from paintings with intricate frames to beautiful marble sculptures. Everything's here! You might just stumble upon the perfect souvenir!

Set foot on a "Best Gelato in Town" Quest
Come on, you're in Venice. There's no better place for you to do your hunt than the most popular place in Veneto. Start by crossing the Ponte di Rialto then shamelessly stop at every Gelateria there is. I'm going to tell you, this is the best thing that has happened to your life yet. Though there have been rumors that the Alaska Gelateria at the Calle Larga dei Bari has the best Gelato, there's no better way to experience Venice than exploring each and every shop out there (but sorry for the added pounds). Of course, end it with a cup of Caffé Latté!

Just one tip: I listened to Laura Pausini's Benvenuto for the rest of the trip. It's so good. So Italian!

"What do you think is the best way to experience the real culture of a certain city? Do you try to interact with the locals like I do? or are you more of the lonewolf?"
